In northwestern Syria, the harsh, biting winter returns. Amidst the unforgiving conditions, in many cases tents are unable to withstand the harsh elements, which captures the daily struggle of displaced families who yearn for stability. In response to this struggle, WATAN collaborated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to build more stable and sustainable shelters for the displaced.
In the town of Batbu, specifically Al-Hamoud and Zeitan sites, 300 shelter units stand, resilient against the elements. Crafted from panel ‘sandwich’ panels, these units defend against the biting cold and relentless heat. They are well designed with bathrooms, kitchens, water tanks and solar energy systems – a place where displaced families can find comfort.
There are also the sites of Al-Kawthar, Maryam, Al-Sultan, and Al-Wefaq Annex, where there are 891 Residential Housing Units (RHUs). They protect against the harsh weather with compressed fiber boards and with foundations of reinforced concrete ensure durability and security. These provide a safe haven for those who have lost their homes and represent for them new beginnings.
The number of units constructed is not just a statistic; it’s a testament to transformed lives. Behind every door lies a unique narrative, a story of resilience, hope, and rebirth. It’s the story of families reclaiming moments of stability.
Alongside WATAN’s humanitarian efforts, partners and donors play a pivotal role as the unseen conductors. It’s through their generosity and belief in the cause that these projects become a reality. As we celebrate the achievements of WATAN, it is important to acknowledge the donors and partners who stand as pillars of support.
WATAN’s endeavors have worked to turn despair into possibility, and adversity into triumph. In the heart of each shelter lies a story of resilience, a testament to the unshakeable human spirit. Together, let us continue to champion this cause, to support WATAN in its mission to create a brighter future for those who have endured dark times. Each contribution, big or small, helps make a change across borders and generations. WATAN’s work is a collective effort, a reminder that in unity, we find strength, and in compassion, we discover the true essence of humanity.
