Saving “Askar”... The story of a child who survived the well of death

In Askar’s town in northern Syria relies heavily on agriculture for its livelihood. Every household in the area has a water well to meet various needs, from irrigation to daily household uses. However, an unexpected incident changed everything.

Askar, a child who, like all kids, loves to play and explore, was climbing near the house when he accidentally fell into the water well. The narrow opening of the well posed a severe risk due to the lack of oxygen at its depths. Fortunately, rescue teams responded quickly, lowering ropes to pull him out from a depth of 3 meters.

The intricate rescue operation lasted for five continuous hours, utilizing heavy tools and machinery with exceptional skill and effort. This operation was just the beginning, as Askar was then transferred to Idlib Hospital for essential medical care. At the hospital, medical teams worked tirelessly to save his life, as he urgently needed blood units and intensive care. When the request for blood reached WATAN’s Blood Bank in Idlib, ambulance teams swiftly transported the compatible blood units after thorough testing to ensure their safety. These units arrived at the hospital in record time, allowing for a crucial and life-saving blood transfusion.

After receiving the vital units and comprehensive care, Askar’s condition stabilized. The detailed efforts involved in his rescue and treatment saved him from what could have been a tragic outcome, leaving an indelible mark on both his and his parents’ memories.

When discussing WATAN’s swift and effective response in the health sector, it’s important to recognize the immense efforts to provide critical services. Notably, WATAN supplies 9,000 blood units per month to various groups through its 8 affiliated blood banks, ranging from Al-Bab to Idlib. This initiative is more than just a medical achievement; it is a vital lifeline for many individuals.

We must also acknowledge the profound impact of individual actions by the people of northwestern Syria and the significance of the blood units they donate. These donations save lives like Askar’s and will continue to save hundreds of children and wounded individuals during their most critical times, where every drop of blood can mean the difference between life and death. Let’s keep these stories alive, as they teach us not only the value of patience but also how to cherish life.
